Material Selection

Suncast’s starting place in its responsibilities of providing wear part solutions for customers is to carefully review material selection. We work with you to determine where and how best to use PUR, prior to formulating the ‘material recipe’ and manufacturing processes to be used to make the needed parts.

Castable polyurethanes (PURs) are made by mixing a liquid prepolymer with a curative. The prepolymer consists of a polyol chain (“spine” or soft segment) with reactive isocyanate groups on each end. The curative or “chain extender” links the prepolymer chains together to form the polymer, which is a combination of soft segments and hard segments. The soft segments allow flexibility and stretch and the hard segments provide for memory and contribute to the hardness and several other properties of the PUR elastomer.

There are many types of polyols and curatives which can be combined in different ways to yield an almost endless variety of materials, each with different physical properties. Correctly selecting the right PUR for the operating conditions and demands of a given application is crucial.

PURs are known for their:

  • Abrasion Resistance
  • Toughness
  • Tear & Cut Resistance
  • Load Bearing Ability
  • Environmental Resistance (eg, many hydrocarbons)

PURs are excellent in:
  • SLIDING ABRASION APPLICATIONS
  • MODERATE IMPACT CONDITIONS
  • METALLIC AREAS SUBJECT TO CORROSION
  • HIGH LOAD APPLICATIONS
  • CUSTOM PARTS & SMALL PRODUCTION RUN APPLICATIONS
  • LINING PIPE SECTIONS USED IN SLURRY, HYDROTRANSPORT OR OTHER HIGH WEAR PIPELINE APPLICATIONS
